Mutualist Blog: Free Market Anti-Capitalism

To dissolve, submerge, and cause to disappear the political or governmental system in the economic system by reducing, simplifying, decentralizing and suppressing, one after another, all the wheels of this great machine, which is called the Government or the State. --Proudhon, General Idea of the Revolution

This absolutely agrees with my experience of dreaded 'socialised healthcare' in New Zealand. The doctors are more, competent, caring, respectful, tolerane, and available than they are in the States. The only net beneficiaries of the American-style system are, as you note, the rich and upper-middle class who can afford to pay for major health expenses out of pocket.

All the hysterical warnings about how awful things are in countries with socialized medicine are starting to remind me of the school lessons in Stalinist Russia about how bad the working class had it in the West, or the Oceanian propaganda about the horrible standard of living before Ingsoc.

Some idiot a few months back said that Dr. Stephen Hawking would have been killed by the death panels of the NHS--after which Hawking gently pointed out that he'd actually been born in the UK and lived there all his life, and hadn't been snuffed out yet.

I agree with Aster, from a Canadian perspective. Never had any problems when I need medical care. Complete coverage for $610 CDN a year.

One thing I would like to add to this is how single payer health care actually increases freedom. While it decreases the freedom of a handful of corporations, it vastly increases the freedom of the rest of the population. As a Canadian I have never had to worry about being driven into debt or bankruptcy by medical problems. What a burden off my shoulders!
